Your first payslip in the UK: what to check before small errors become routine

Your first payslip is more than a receipt. It is evidence of hours, pay, tax, deductions and the way an employer has set you up. Checking it early can stop small mistakes becoming a monthly pattern.

For Arab and MENA-origin women entering the UK labour market — including students, new graduates, mothers returning to work, carers, freelancers moving into employment and women taking a first local job — payslip language can be confusing. Gross pay, net pay, tax code, National Insurance, deductions and holiday pay may not be explained unless you ask.

Compare payslip to your own record

Keep your own notes of shifts, start/finish times, breaks, overtime and agreed hourly rate. When the payslip arrives, compare it with your record. If the pay looks below the official minimum rate for your age/status, or deductions are unclear, ask for an explanation in writing.

Tax questions are normal

An emergency tax code or missing information can affect take-home pay. Use official HMRC/GOV.UK routes to check your tax where relevant, and keep copies of payslips because they may be needed for housing, benefits, visa evidence, mortgages or future job checks.

What to do today

  • Create a simple shift log on your phone or paper diary.
  • Save each payslip as a PDF or screenshot in a private folder.
  • Check gross pay, net pay, hours, deductions, tax code and holiday pay.
  • Ask early, politely and in writing if something does not match.
