Your UK eVisa is not a screenshot: what to check before you need it

A practical first-month guide for Arab and MENA women on checking a UKVI account, proving status and keeping digital immigration evidence safe.

For many newcomers, the most important immigration document is no longer a card kept in a purse. It is a UKVI account, a sign-in route and the ability to create a share code when an employer, landlord, university or service asks to check status.

That can feel abstract until the first urgent moment: starting work, renewing a tenancy, opening a student file, returning to the UK after travel, or helping a family member understand what evidence is safe to share. A screenshot may help you remember a page, but it is not the official way to prove status. The live check normally happens through GOV.UK, using a share code or the viewer service.

For Arab and MENA-origin women settling in the UK, the practical issue is not only technology. It is privacy, language, confidence and knowing who should — and should not — hold account details. A spouse, parent, sponsor, agent or helpful friend may assist with forms, but your UKVI sign-in details are part of your personal legal record. Keep them in a place you control.

The safest routine is simple: check that you can sign in to your UKVI account before you need it; confirm your passport or travel document details are current; know how to generate a share code; and save official links rather than forwarding screenshots around WhatsApp groups.

If something does not match — an old phone number, changed passport, spelling issue or inaccessible email — do not leave it until the day an employer asks for evidence. Use the official GOV.UK pages and, for complex immigration worries, get regulated advice rather than relying on social media comments.

What to do today

  • Sign in to your UKVI account from GOV.UK, not a saved image.
  • Check that your phone, email and identity document details are current.
  • Practise creating a share code and note when it expires.
  • Do not share your password or one-time codes with anyone who does not need them.
