You may be buying bedding, answering family messages, finding your campus, trying to understand a new accent and pretending you are less tired than you are. AWWN’s advice for the first seven days is simple: do not try to master the whole UK system. Start with the small control points that protect your independence later.

For Arab and MENA women arriving for study, work, family or a new beginning, “settling in” is not only a checklist. It is a private negotiation between confidence and uncertainty. One woman may be fluent in English but nervous about official websites. Another may be comfortable at university but unsure how to register with a doctor. Another may have someone kind helping with forms, while still needing to know her own passwords and recovery details.

Start with access, not perfection

In 2026, your digital immigration status matters. GOV.UK describes eVisas as online records of immigration status and explains how to use a UKVI account to view status and get share codes. That makes your email address, phone number and account recovery details part of your practical safety. If someone helped you set things up, that is not a problem. But you should be able to sign in yourself.

Make a private folder — digital, paper or both — for your passport, eVisa/UKVI details, university or employer letters, accommodation papers, prescriptions and emergency contacts. If you share a phone or laptop, think carefully about privacy. Independence often begins with knowing where your own records are.

Register with a GP before you need one

NHS guidance says everyone in England can register with a GP surgery for free, and many surgeries allow online registration. Do not wait until you are unwell, short of medication or too anxious to explain the problem. Early registration is especially important if you have a long-term condition, are pregnant, take regular medication, need mental-health support or simply want somewhere safe to ask health questions.

Give yourself a local map

There is emotional comfort in knowing ordinary places: the nearest pharmacy, supermarket, library, bus stop, student services office, cashpoint and one route home that feels safe after dark. These are not glamorous tasks. They are the handles you reach for when the week feels too full.

What to do today

Check one login: UKVI/eVisa, main email, university portal or bank app.

Save one document privately.

Find the GP registration page for your postcode.

Ask your university/accommodation provider what proof-of-address letter they can issue.

Send one honest message to someone safe.

This is general community information, not immigration, legal, medical or financial advice. Start small. A calm first week can change the shape of the first term.

Download the AWWN guide/checklist

Your first week in the UK: the small admin steps that protect your independence includes a designed bilingual AWWN resource guide you can save, print, or share privately.

Download guide PDF

Sources checked

GOV.UK eVisa guidance — accessed 14 September 2026

GOV.UK view/prove status — accessed 14 September 2026

NHS GP registration — accessed 14 September 2026

Last checked: 14 September 2026.
