For Arab and MENA women settling in the UK, missing home is not a sign that you made the wrong decision. It is a human response to starting again.

Many onboarding guides move quickly from bank accounts to transport apps. Those things matter. But a woman also needs a map of people and places that help her stay steady. In the first month, belonging is often built through very small points of contact: a librarian who explains printing, a society event where you do not have to explain your name twice, a GP receptionist who tells you the next step, a friend who lets you say “I am tired” without turning it into drama.

Do not wait for a crisis to build support

NHS and specialist organisations such as Mind and Student Minds explain routes for mental-health information and support, but it is easier to ask for help when you already know where to go. Save your university wellbeing service, student advice team, GP surgery and local urgent-help routes. You may never need all of them. Having them written down can still reduce the fear of not knowing what to do.

Choose different people for different needs

One person cannot be everything. A practical contact may be the friend who understands council tax letters, student accommodation rules or which bus reaches campus. An emotional contact may be the person who will not judge your homesickness. A professional contact may be student services, a GP, a counsellor or a community organisation. Separating these roles protects friendships from becoming emergency systems.

Culture shock can look quiet

Culture shock is not always dramatic. It can look like sleeping at strange hours, avoiding phone calls, eating badly, staying in your room, feeling irritated by small differences or feeling ashamed that you are not enjoying an opportunity everyone congratulated you for. These feelings deserve kindness, but they also deserve attention if they become heavy, persistent or unsafe.

What to do today

Write down three support contacts: practical, emotional and professional.

Find one local place where you can sit without spending much money.

Save NHS, university or trusted mental-health support links.

Send one honest message: “I am okay, but I miss home today.”

AWWN’s reminder is gentle: independence does not mean doing everything alone. You are allowed to build a circle slowly.

Download the AWWN guide/checklist

Homesickness is not failure: how to build a first-month support circle in the UK includes a designed bilingual AWWN resource guide you can save, print, or share privately.

Download guide PDF

Sources checked

NHS mental health services — accessed 14 September 2026

Student Minds support information — accessed 14 September 2026

Mind information and support — accessed 14 September 2026

Last checked: 14 September 2026.
